This route collection for Train Simulator includes Just Trains' Western Mainlines route plus ALL of the extensions which were subsequently modelled for the Western Mainlines route add-on:

  • Western Mainlines
  • Cornish Main Line Extension
  • South Devon Main Line Extension
  • Oxford to Bicester Extension
  • Paignton Extension
Western Mainlines includes the routes from Paddington-Bristol, Bristol-Cardiff and Bristol-Exeter, all seamlessly connected and giving you a total of some 300 miles to drive!

Cornish Main Line Extension runs 78 miles from Plymouth in Devon down to Penzance in Cornwall, passing through 22 custom-built stations

South Devon Main Line Extension brings you the 100-mile route from Highbridge and Burnham station in Somerset to Plymouth in Devon, passing through 14 detailed stations.

Oxford to Bicester Extension runs from the newly created chord that runs south off the main London-Birmingham route, the Chiltern Line. The extension includes the three new stations at Bicester Village, Islip and Oxford Parkway and then continues onto Oxford station, meaning that you can drive from the chord north of Bicester right through to any destination on the Western Mainlines routes.

Paignton Extension is around nine miles in length and includes Torre, Torquay and Paignton stations.

See the Detailed Description below for full details of all the included routes!

Important! If you purchased Train Simulator after 20 September 2012 then you will require the European Loco & Asset Pack (available to purchase via Steam) for these routes to display correctly.

Some of the scenarios supplied with these routes require rolling stock that is not supplied with this software. Full details of the rolling stock required are provided in the Scenarios section of each route in the Detailed Description below.

WESTERN MAINLINES

Set in the years between 2013 and 2015, Western Mainlines consists of three newly developed routes running from the terminus station of London Paddington to Bristol, from Bristol to Cardiff and from Bristol to Exeter, all connected seamlessly together in this one pack.

Featuring both the south lines through Box Tunnel and the northern lines via Bristol Parkway, as well as the lines to Oxford, Western Mainlines features 60 stations and numerous new custom assets along with a set of 18 extensive scenarios. The route is Quick Drive enabled.

Paddington to Bristol - this line is the main route running East-West in southern England. Starting from its grand London terminus at Paddington, it runs out to Bristol and from there to Cardiff in Wales and south-west from Bristol to Exeter in this simulation. The line is largely non-electrified, but in the late 1990s the section from Paddington to Heathrow Airport was electrified. There are plans to electrify all of the real-world route but this work is taking time and has been beset by numerous delays.

Bristol to Cardiff - the route from Bristol to Cardiff is part of the South Wales Main Line and continues the westward journey. It breaks away from the main Paddington-Bristol line at Royal Wootton Bassett and continues under the River Severn using the Severn Tunnel. There are plans to electrify the whole of the equivalent real-world route but, again, there have been numerous delays.

Bristol to Exeter - the line from Bristol to Exeter is a major branch of the line from Paddington to Bristol and runs south-west from Bristol.

You can take a look at the Route Map here!

This is because the yard at Fowey Dock (Carne Point) is being repaired and so a shunter will deliver the empties and collect your loaded rake from Lostwithiel. This is a short but tricky run as it’s a heavy load.

WESTERN MAINLINES OXFORD TO BICESTER EXTENSION

Drive on the newest line on the UK rail network! The Oxford-Bicester line was opened in October 2015, superseding the previous single track with 100MPH-capable dual track and employing the latest Integrated Lightweight Signals (iLS). All the previous level crossings except the one at London Road, Bicester, have been closed and have been replaced with bridges. The two stations at Bicester Town and Islip have been totally rebuilt and a brand new station called Oxford Parkway has been built to the north of Oxford. These three stations are state of the art, and Bicester Village station (as it has been renamed) and Oxford Parkway employ amazingly light and airy architectural designs.

The Just Trains Oxford-Bicester Extension runs from the newly created chord that runs south off the main London-Birmingham route, the Chiltern line. The extension includes the three new stations at Bicester Village, Islip and Oxford Parkway and then continues onto Oxford station which means that you can drive from the chord north of Bicester right through to any destination on the Western Mainlines routes!

SOUTH DEVON MAIN LINE PAIGNTON EXTENSION

Want to visit one of the most popular seaside towns in Devon?

This Paignton Extension is around nine miles in length and includes Torre, Torquay and Paignton stations, new custom assets and a set of eight Standard and two Free Roam scenarios, giving you over 12 hours of scenario driving time. The route is Quick Drive enabled.

With this Extension installed you will be able to drive all the way from London Paddington down to the balmy English Riviera.

SOUTH DEVON MAIN LINE PAIGNTON EXTENSION - THE ROUTE

The line to Paignton branches off from the South Devon Main Line just south of Newton Abbot and is around nine miles in length.

The first section of the line from Newton Abbot to Torquay (the present Torre railway station) opened in December 1848.

Driving south from Newton Abbot, the railway expands out to four tracks. Two tracks heading towards Penzance turn westwards at Aller junction whilst the two for Paignton carry on due south and past the remains of the former Kingskerswell railway station. You can still see the platforms there.

At Torre station you can see the disused signal box on the eastbound platform. This box was unusually tall so that the signalman could look over the footbridge to see trains approaching up the steep gradient.

The route now descends towards Torquay station; it was opened in 1859, although today's buildings and old signal box date from 1878.

The line passes a headland at Preston before the dropping down into Paignton, with more views of the beaches and sea. Immediately outside Paignton station is a busy level crossing situated right in the town centre.

The ticket office is now located in the 1859 goods shed. The Paignton and Dartmouth Steam Railway is situated alongside on the western side of the station.
