I already own RailWorks 2 – can I upgrade?

If you are an existing RailWorks 2 owner your software will be automatically upgraded to include all the new RailWorks 3 features the next time you log in to your Steam account. There is no need to buy RailWorks 3. Please ensure that you have Automatic Updates enabled.

Note that this free upgrade does not include the Horseshoe Curve route, which is only for new users purchasing RailWorks 3. Horseshoe Curve will be available to buy as a Download for existing RailWorks users from our friends at Get Games.

What’s new in RailWorks 3 Train Simulator 2012 – is this an all-new version?

The new simulator includes the routes and rolling stock from the previous RailWorks 2, but with a number of upgraded features. For new customers there is also an additional route in the form of Horseshoe Curve in the United States, and this showcases many of the new features.

New features in RailWorks 3 include:

  • New improved graphics engine with realistic lighting and shadow effects
  • Rain on cab glass and working wipers to help clear the screen
  • Support for Super Elevation and uneven track, with cab sway visible from within the cab
  • Upgraded models of the Class 47, 166 and SD40
  • Concept version of the Hitachi Super Express passenger train

Are all the Just Trains add-ons which are compatible with RailWorks 2 also compatible with RailWorks 3 Train Simulator 2012?

In most cases they should be compatible, but there may be various issues due to changes in the way that RailWorks 3 works. Where possible we will update add-ons and issue free patches to fix these issues, but this may take some time depending on what is affected and what is needed to create a solution.

We are currently testing our add-ons with the final release version of RailWorks 3 just to make absolutely sure. Check the ‘Compatibility’ section on the product pages.

What about the new features - rain, lights, cab sway and so on - in existing Just Trains add-ons?

Some of the new features are automatically introduced to existing add-ons, such as cab sway and improved shadows. Other features will require considerable additional development work and we hope to introduce these to future Just Trains add-ons. We are busy working through our older releases to upgrade their functionality and features, and will have more details of our plans in the coming months.

Fixes for the Totham and Bristol to Exeter routes

We have now issued two small hotfix patches for anyone experiencing problems with the points appearing dark and also some optimisations to the appearance of lighting objects used on these routes. Please see the Totham support page and the Bristol to Exeter support page to download these updates.

Fix for the Cargowaggon Flat IGA

Confirmed known issues with Just Trains add-ons when used in RailWorks 3

We are compiling a list of known issues based on customer feedback and our own testing. Current known issues are:

  • A4 Pacific and Streamlined Princess Coronation (base pack and add-on packs) – Incorrect texture appearance. Please try switching off the TSX Engine in the settings panel of the RailWorks 3 launcher screen.
  • Bristol to Exeter and Totham – Dark appearance to the points compared with other trackwork.
  • Objects such as the Railway Museum at York (Newcastle to York Modern) and station buildings not appearing – This is due to the graphical display settings within RailWorks 3 changing from their setting in RailWorks 2. Please go to
Options > Graphical Detail and set the master detail level to Custom and then put the Scenery Detail up to 10.

All these issues are being investigated and we hope to issue fixes as soon as possible. If you have a problem not listed above then please check the support section of the website for any available updates which may fix the problem. If you continue to have trouble then you can contact our support team via the support pages.

Support tip: Verifying Game Cache Files

Steam has a guide to Verifying Game Cache Files which should be followed if you are having trouble getting content to load in RailWorks 3 Train Simulator 2012 after having performed the update. This will ensure that all of the default files are the latest versions and nothing is missing.
