The S8 London Underground stock has been in service since 2010 and is used on the Metropolitan, District, Circle and Hammersmith & City lines. The S Stock ('S' stands for 'Sub-surface') has less seating than previous trains, but is capable of faster acceleration and has more room for standing passengers.

The S8 stock has air conditioning and low floors to help access for disabled passengers and it is possible for passengers to walk from one car to the next while the train is moving.

The S8 will operate on any third- or fourth-rail route but our London-Aylesbury route has been specifically built with part of the Metropolitan line included where it runs beside the main line route. The Metropolitan line section has been built with custom London Underground signalling and includes various invisible markers which allow the full functioning of S8 features such as the Tripcock safety device, door opening interlock and the simulated in-cab video screens which display at stations.

FEATURES

  • Part-operational TCMS (Train Control Management System)
  • TCMS display auto-extinguishes over 4 MPH and re-displays under 4 MPH.
  • TCMS operator – Login screen:
     - Duty number
     - Handheld radio number
     - Train number
     - Destination code and next destination code
     - Scrollable selection of destination codes. The code entered displays on the external front and side matrix displays along with its description, such as Fast, Semi-Fast and All Stations.
  • TCMS Operator – station screen:
     - Date
     - Service number
     - Next/current station name (changes at each station)
     - Line name
     - Door status showing open/closed
     - PEA carriage (Passenger Emergency Alarm)
     - Active events indication
     - Destination code screen button
  • TCMS Operator – Control Panel:
     - Operational sleet brush control
     - Operational de-ice control (when de-ice units in consist)
     - Operational active events indication
  • TCMS Main Menu:
     - Active events indication
     - De-ice and sleet brush indications. De-ice indications ONLY operational when consist has de-ice units.
  • Enter radio number (entered number also displays on the radio head)
  • Operating radio display that displays the different radio centre names as you drive on the Metropolitan line
  • Radio displays calling emergency function if Traction Brake Control (dead man's handle function) is not used to cancel alarm.
  • Operating PEA (Passenger Emergency Alarm)
  • Operating tripcock system (requires Just Trains London Underground signals). Includes TCMS alert and reset. Passing a signal at danger will apply emergency braking. Realistic tripcock reset procedure required: Speed Control After Tripcock (SCAT) activation, requiring you to drive in Restricted Manual Mode for three minutes after tripcock reset.
  • Train rollback protection. Emergency brake application and active alarm alert if train is allowed to roll backwards.
  • Operational calling on light with authentic procedure required to operate.
  • Restricted Mode (RM) operational – allows a maximum speed of 10 MPH – this is used in certain manoeuvres such as yard work
  • Manual or automatic passenger door operation using authentic procedures
  • Latest version of SID (Signalling Interface Device) display used as at February 2019. Use of the train in RM displays correct 10 MPH speedometer range.
  • Internal and external sounds recorded from a real S8 and include the cab air conditioning unit, various cab switches and controls, windscreen wipers and on the exterior the distinctive motor sounds, unique London Underground whistle, air conditioning units, AC/DC convertor, air compressors and door opening and closing audio warnings.
  • Developed in conjunction with a current S8 driver to ensure the utmost authenticity and accuracy
  • De-icing units
  • Working external door and de-icing ODIL (Outside Door Indicator Lights)
  • Accurate stopping required using the platform-placed stopping chevrons to allow the doors and simulated in-cab video screens to operate.
  • Doors interlock, i.e. you cannot drive away if the passenger or driver doors are not shut and proved.
  • Weak field indication on SID (Signalling Interface Device) when weak field is detected
  • Weak field operation affects train dynamics, acceleration and top speed
  • Authentic carriage number displayed in cab and in correct sequence on the exterior of each carriage
  • Operating hazard lights – flashing front train headlights
  • Working external matrix-style destination displays that change depending on which trip is entered in the TCMS
  • Operational cab lighting – cab light auto-extinguishes when Master Control Switch is moved from Shutdown
  • Windscreen wipers with slow and fast speeds
  • Passenger door sensitive edge operation simulated
  • SID (Signalling Interface Device) shows appropriate displays depending on which MCS mode you have set
  • Operational air pressure gauge
  • Operational emergency brake plungers
  • Operating door open and close buttons for left and right side
  • Simulated in-cab video screens showing a static generic platform display (Train Simulator does not support in-cab video) – one or two of these will display, depending on platform length and on which side the platform is
  • Drivers cab authentically modelled
  • Passenger cabin authentically modelled with animated passenger doors

For full S8 functionality, the Just Trains Chiltern Main Line London-Aylesbury Extension or London-Aylesbury stand-alone route is required. The London-Aylesbury routes has part of the Metropolitan line running beside it from Finchley Road to Amersham. The routes include authentic London Underground signalling.

All the above are subject to change as development continues.
