The Class E652 locomotive, nicknamed the 'Tigre' (Tiger), was the natural evolution of the E632 and E633 locomotives. The E652 combines the hauling capacity and acceleration of the E633 with the speed of the E632 but, although looking very similar externally, electrically they are very different, especially with their new higher power motors.
Construction started in 1989 and these were the first Italian locomotives to feature an entirely electronic diagnostics screen in the cab.
As of 2017, 171 E652 locomotives were assigned to the Global Logistic (Cargo) Division of Trenitalia. They mainly hauled freight trains, although they can sometimes be seen hauling passenger trains, normally on long-range workings although this could well be due to the original pulling locomotive having failed and the E652 acting as a rescue locomotive.
